The relevant $pi$-orbitals in a unit cell of the V-O-ladder plane. The ladder is running in y-direction, OR is the oxygen on the rung, OL is the oxygen on the leg. There are two ladders running through the unit cell. Each leg oxygen has a px-orbital belonging to `its' ladder, and a py-orbital $pi$-bonded to the neighboring ladder (black bows). If one chooses the unit cell as indicated in dashs, then those latter bonds never cross boundaries of unit cells. Hence this hybridization is not k-dependent, and the V d-orbital can be replaced by the molecular orbital of this bond in every band consideration. There remain three relevant orbitals to be dealt with: the molecular V-orbital just discussed, one OR-orbital, and one OL-orbital.
